14 In Materials by Design, both process–structure and structure–property models are evaluated and refined to maximise the model-predictability grounded in the Materials Genome, which is powered by fundamental research on high-quality databases. The quality of the materials innovation is determined by the mechanistic models applied in the ICMD framework, which follow the universal process–structure–property–performance paradigm in materials science. The application of both techniques spans the entire course of materials innovation, which can be divided into three phases: concept implementation, materials and processing design, and material qualification. As indicated in Figure 1, the backbone of the ICMD infrastructure is composed of Materials by Design and accelerated insertion of materials (AIM) techniques. In the development of applied engineering materials design powered by fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic genomic databases, a hierarchical infrastructure called ICMD presents a proven scenario of materials genomic design for accelerated engineering innovation. 13 The highest achievements of full cycle compression have been demonstrated in US research, which will be the focus of this paper. 5– 10 Particularly notable has been the design work of Bhadeshia 8 at the University of Cambridge and his former students including Harada 11, 12 and Reed. Creation of the infrastructure of this technology has been a global activity as summarised in a recent series of viewpoint papers on materials genomics. As a subfield of the broader field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), which includes modelling of existing materials, 3, 4 the MGI centres on design of new materials and their accelerated qualification through the inherent predictability of designed systems. The far-reaching multi-agency enterprise, Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), 1, 2 highlights computational materials design techniques grounded in fundamental databases, which can support an ambition of decreasing the full development cycle of new materials from the present 10–20 years to ⩽5 years.

Making the Purchase and Developing the Business A lot of franchises, once they get to a certain point, just stop evolving. They spoke very favorably about the company, its mission, and its leadership.Īnother thing that impressed him about The Junkluggers was that they are constantly evolving their business model. They let him know running a Junkluggers franchise was going to take a lot of work, but you also had the opportunity to be very successful. “Part of my work involved modeling out all the business’s financials, so I understand what the revenue generation and costs of a franchise look like.”Īll the franchisees that Siegel contacted were very supportive, yet honest. “I've read about 40 FDDs from various franchisors cover to cover, which is more than many franchise brokers,” he said. He reviewed The Junkluggers FDD (Franchise Disclosure Document) and when it came time to conducting due diligence, Siegel was very thorough- even making about 20 to 30 validation calls to franchisees. With the experience Siegel had gained while working for BRIX Holdings, a multi-brand franchise company that owns Red Mango Frozen Yogurt and Souper Salads, among others, he was very familiar with the franchise industry. Between the number of people moving in and out and businesses turning over, there's a steady demand for having furniture and equipment hauled away. The junk hauling business isn’t necessarily affected by a recession either. “I'm dealing with seniors who are downsizing before moving into assisted living facilities, companies that are moving their offices and trying to get rid of furniture and filing cabinets, or parents turning their kid’s room into a gym once they are out of the house.” They're about bringing you more stuff, not removing it,” he said. “I doubt that any major retailers are going to get into the junk-hauling business anytime soon. Plus, The Junkluggers business model fit Siegel’s vetting criteria. He explains their process: “When we pick things up, the first option is always, ‘how do we donate it?’ If a donation center doesn't want it, is it recyclable? If not, ‘is it up-cyclable?’ Meaning, ‘can we refurbish it and then re-sell it, donating a portion of the proceeds to a local charity?’ Our very last option is taking it to the landfill.” In a way, The Junkluggers was part of who he was. Siegel has always been mindful about finding ways to reuse things. Additionally, he was very excited about their focus on donating collected items to local charities that served the community. He found their eco-friendly concept and focus on landfill diversion very appealing. Then one day he was introduced by a franchise broker (Ted Hooten) to The Junkluggers, a furniture and junk removal franchise. I really enjoy running business processes.” “I would get up at 6AM on a Saturday and run through them on Excel. With his extensive background in business strategy, he knew to do thorough research, ask detailed questions and crunch the numbers. But I have rules when reviewing a business - I want it to be major retailer/e-commerce-proof, I want it to be recession-resistant, and have a positive impact on the community”, Siegel said. “I was looking for that shiny object, something that stood out, that diamond in the rough. So, though we face challenges beyond our control, they aren’t beyond His control. Her quote conveys to me that even though trials are unpredictable, God is constant and in control. ~ Ephesians 4:26 (NKJV) God’s Sovereignty "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath. However, they also encourage us to take ownership of our reactions to those challenges and to choose not to let them define us or hold us back (Ephesians 4:26). Her words acknowledge that life can be unpredictable and we may face difficult circumstances. “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Maya AngelouĪngelou’s quote is a powerful reminder that even though we can’t always control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond to those events. Get comfortable, my friend, and join me as we dive into the words of Maya Angelou together. So, grab a warm cup of tea and a cozy blanket. Her words offer a powerful testament to our ability to live each day with purpose, passion, and praise for its endless possibilities. Through her poetry, memoirs, and activism, Maya Angelou showed us that we can overcome even the most brutal circumstances. Today, I want to explore some of her most uplifting quotes on life to shed some light on your path through this beautiful, chaotic journey we call life. Her words have been a source of comfort and inspiration to millions. Maya Angelou was a force to be reckoned with, a trailblazer who faced adversity and triumphed over it. It is worth mentioning that Google continues to face one of the most high-profile antitrust cases ever brought forth by the Department of Justice (DOJ). Of late, Alphabet is facing mounting legal challenges and scrutiny over its market dominance. While the final approval of the judge is still awaited, let’s take a closer look at Alphabet’s legal risks. However, Google kept the terms under wraps until it lost a related case to the video game developer, Epic Games, last week. Interestingly, the settlement was reached in September 2023. Moreover, Google will be allowing direct downloads of apps from developers’ websites in place of using Google Play or other online stores. Regarding this, the company will provide an alternative billing system for in-app purchases. In addition to the penalty, the company has agreed to make slight changes to its app store. Out of the total penalty amount, $630 million will be allocated to a settlement fund to benefit consumers, while the remaining $70 million will be deposited into a fund used by the states. The lawsuit accuses the tech giant of using unlawful restrictions on app distribution and imposing exorbitant fees for in-app transactions to suppress competition on its Android app store, Google Play. states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Alphabet’s ( NASDAQ:GOOGL) subsidiary, Google, has agreed to pay $700 million to settle an antitrust lawsuit filed in 2021 by all 50 U.S. |
